I want to be free to do what I want.
Not to be under anyone’s command.
I want to go here or go there or do this or do that.
Not succumb to someone’s demand.
I want to step over the line and cross the barricade.
Not follow the rules and stay in my lane.
I want to wear what I want and say what I want.
Not cause anyone any pain.
We all want what we want, it’s in our genes.
Not something we choose, but something we’ve been given.
Our caregivers are the first to set the boundaries.
Of course, we defy them and try not to give in.
Without that direction we are not being loved.
We want what we want even when it’s not best.
Don’t put that in your mouth or jump from your window.
They’re looking out for us, we’re not being oppressed.
When we don’t receive that love, we really struggle.
And even worse we receive punishment that doesn’t fit the crime.
Afterall, those looking out for us also want what they want too.
So rather than keeping their eyes on us, they get distracted for a time.
This leaves us all broken going into the world.
And looking for something or someone to meet our needs.
How will we flourish if we are all seeking to be filled?
Not well – even the skeptic willingly concedes.
The freedom that we seek doesn’t come from inside.
It comes from the One that created us all.
Even Jesus didn’t want to follow His father’s plan.
But He did and He led us away from the fall.
We can resist and say it’s not true.
But if it is, there is nowhere that we can run.
There is no where we can hide.
Our defiance is the very thing that leads us to the Son.
