When you have your eyes open, and you look all around,
The sights and the sounds, they simply astound.
Your mind works so hard, to process it all,
Crunching all the data, until hitting a wall.
Why? How? You do want to know,
The truth about the world, and the way you should go.
Spinning on a ball that’s flying through space,
Is there any purpose to this life you embrace?
Deep down inside someone calls out,
Like a whisper in your mind and so quickly you doubt.
So many paths, Which way should you go?
This way or that? You simply don’t know.
So you choose a direction and take a few steps,
Only to find out later that you’ve stacked up regrets.
When you were young, you surely got hurt,
And you learned pretty fast, ways to avert.
You weren’t even aware as you did it without thinking,
You created your escape routes and you use them like blinking.
Little did you know that that your true protector was calling,
And that the life He offered was simply enthralling.
He isn’t asking you to shut down your mind,
He wants you to trust Him and not to be blind.
For years I resisted and kept my eyes shut,
Dismissing all the signs, I was stuck in a rut,
Until something happened that defied explanation,
And my mind was opened to begin preparation.
No longer dismissing what I didn’t understand,
My eyes were opened to what was simply at hand.
Child prodigies that do what can’t be done,
The unimaginable power and radiance of the sun.
Doctors in awe at X-rays now clear,
After telling a patient and instilling nothing but fear,
And code inside our cells that can replicate a person,
All of these are real, of what are you certain?
Then there is suffering and horrible pain,
We see it all around, a constant refrain.
It impacts us all and cuts to our core,
What can make sense of war after war?
And there is beauty we can not deny,

Just look up in awe at the stars filling the sky.
Or at the creations we see all around,
A tree, flower or mountain, their majesty abounds.
There is music that moves us deep down inside,
And paintings whose power can’t be denied.
There is also evil so cruel it’s hard to fathom,
And killings so gruesome we can hardly imagine.
This mixture of good and evil combined,
Can be contemplated forever in the recesses of your mind.
There is also the conscience that must be addressed,
You know right from wrong, if you’d simply attest.
While you seek an escape by looking at pictures,
You’re convicted to your core reading the scriptures.
And it gets even worse when you realize what you’re confronting,
Since a lot of the evil in this world is what you are funding.
There are experiences you’ve lived through,
And things you can’t undo.
Who can make sense of this thing we call life?
With all of it’s brilliance and also it’s strife?
While we don’t have all the answers as we walk on this earth,
There is one who does and he’s known you since birth.
If you hear a small voice calling you to something bigger,
Remember that His way can stand up to intellectual rigor.
Far from being something irrational,
Belief in Jesus is something that’s rational.
